How to copy the larger files (greater than 4GB) in to USB

Rate this Post:

In general you will observe an error window showing "No enough space in Pen drive" while copying a single file of size 4GB or greater than 4GB to your pen drive (USB stick), even you have the 8GB or 16GB free space in your sticks. This is annoying you while copying the .ISO files or some other image files (usually these are the larger than 4GB).

So, how can you over come this problem with your pen drives???

Here is the simple solution, try it if U face this problem...

First of all, let's try to understand the problem which prevents you from copying the larger (>4GB) files. In default, all the USB sticks are with FAT32 format and Allocation unit size as default or 4.096KB. For larger files this is the problem, large files need the Allocation unit size which must be 64KB or more. So, if you format your USB stick with 64KB Allocation unit block size & either with exFat or NTFS, then the problem will be solved. That means, whenever you start copying the file the 64KB amount of block will be copied at once.

So, just do the following steps with your pen drive to make it work with larger files

  • Connect your pen drive to any windows PC(windows PC have the  NTFS and exFAT file formats )
  • Right click on the pen drive icon and choose the format option to FORMAT your pen drive(backup all the data which is on the pen drive).
  • Now format window will be opened and choose the File system as NTFS or exFAT
  • Allocation unit size as 64KB
  • Give the Label as you wish and tick the quick format option(which will save the time).
That's it, Now your pen drive is ready to copy the files greater than 4GB with out any error notifications.
Still if you are unable to copy data in pen drive, your pen drive may be effected by virus. In that case see how to remove virus in Windows or Linux

Note: Increasing the Allocation Block unit will reduce the effective utilization of the memory so choose this option when ever you are working with >4GB files only.

Thank you.
